Quick answer

Log in to the GST portal (gst.gov.in), click Search Taxpayer and enter the GST number. Logged-in users see the business’s Annual Aggregate Turnover as a range (slab), along with its gross taxable income slab and GST compliance rating. Without login, you only see basic registration details and return filing history.

Before you give goods on credit, you want to know how big the buyer really is. Every GST-registered business leaves a trail on the GST portal, and part of it is public. Here’s what you can see, how to find it, and where it falls short.

What the GST portal shows

Step by step: check turnover by GST number

  1. Log in to gst.gov.in with your own GST username and password.
  2. Go to Search Taxpayer and choose Search by GSTIN/UIN.
  3. Enter the buyer’s GSTIN and click Search.
  4. Read the Annual Aggregate Turnover slab and the Gross Taxable Income slab, and note the financial year they relate to.
  5. Click Show Filing Table to see whether GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B were filed on time for recent months.

Don’t have a GST login? You can still see registration details and filing history on the same page without logging in, but not the turnover.

How to read the turnover slab

  • 📊 It’s a range, not an exact number. Other taxpayers see a slab. Only the business sees its exact figure on its own dashboard.
  • 📅 Check the year. The slab is for a specific financial year. A business can grow or shrink a lot in a year.
  • 🧾 Compare it with your exposure. If a buyer is in a small slab but wants a large credit limit from you, ask more questions before you agree.
  • ⚠️ One PAN, many GSTINs. Turnover is calculated across all GSTINs under the same PAN, so a branch can look bigger than its own activity.

What turnover won’t tell you

Turnover tells you size, not discipline. A large buyer can still pay 120 days late. Before giving credit, also check:

  1. Is the GSTIN active? A cancelled or suspended registration is a red flag.
  2. Are returns filed on time? Regular late filing often signals cash-flow stress.
  3. How does the business pay others? Ask for trade references, and check for court cases and unpaid-dues reports.
  4. Who runs it? Match the directors or partners with the people you deal with.

A faster way to check a buyer

Logging in and checking each GSTIN by hand works for one buyer. For many buyers, TradeSure’s GST number check shows the turnover range, filing history and linked contact details in one place, and the TradeSure business credit report adds the TradeSure Trust Score and court cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check a company’s turnover by GST number?

Yes. Log in to the GST portal, click Search Taxpayer and enter the GSTIN. Logged-in users see the business’s Annual Aggregate Turnover as a range (slab) for the financial year, not the exact figure.

Can I see turnover without logging in to the GST portal?

No. Without login, Search Taxpayer shows the legal and trade name, registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business and return filing history. Turnover, gross taxable income and the compliance rating need a GST login.

Is the turnover shown on the GST portal exact?

No. Other taxpayers see a turnover slab, such as a range in crores. The business itself sees its exact figure on its own dashboard.

What else should I check before giving credit?

Check whether the GSTIN is active, whether returns are filed on time, the gross taxable income slab, and the business’s payment behaviour with other suppliers. Turnover alone does not tell you whether a buyer pays on time.
